Ashley Kempkes - Assistant Librarian, Clinton Macomb Public Library

Ashley Kempkes graduated from the University of North Texas with a BS in Integrative Studies with a focus on Anthropology, English, and History. Ashley then went to Simmons University for a Masters in Library Science, focusing on Youth Studies. During her time in Boston, Ashley worked in several school libraries.

Ashley now works as an assistant librarian at Clinton Macomb Public Library running the after school program, providing young adults with activities such as video games and card games, as well as running one-time programs for young adults.

Danielle Quintanilla - Fujitsu Network Communications

Danielle Quintanilla graduated from UNT in 2020 with B.A.s in both Anthropology and History, and a minor in Spanish. She currently works on the Order Management team at Fujitsu Network Communications in Richardson, TX, where she oversees the fulfillment of all orders for third-party resellers and the many regional telecommunications companies they supply. As an avid learner with way too many interests, she loves the versatility of applied anthropology and enjoys finding new ways to approach and improve supply chain processes using anthropological principles. When not at work, Danielle can be found practicing her epee fencing and hand-sewing historical costumes.

Shannon Cronin - Disaster Recovery Coordinator, Salvation Army Midland Division

Shannon Cronin graduated from UNT with an MS in Applied Anthropology in 2020. Prior to attending UNT, she earned a B.S. in Anthropology and served two years in Americorps doing conservation work in Nevada and disaster recovery in New Orleans. She directed a disaster recovery organization in San Marcos, TX following the Memorial Day floods of 2015.

While attending UNT, Shannon conducted her thesis research on earthquake reconstruction in Kathmandu Valley, Nepal, following the Gorkha earthquake of 2015. Currently, Shannon works for the Salvation Army Midland Division in St. Louis, MO. Her position as Disaster Recovery Coordinator largely focuses on disaster service programming surrounding disasters in Missouri and Illinois, providing leadership and guidance to the overall long-term recovery efforts of the Salvation Army. This role has included grant-writing, management of disaster services staff throughout the division, program administration, and community engagement.

When Shannon is not working, she can be found hiking or working on stained glass.

Morgan Kainu - Applied Anthropologist Researcher, International Space Analog Research and Education Company

Morgan Kainu recently graduated with her BA in Anthropology from the University of North Texas (UNT) and is a certified Applied Anthropologist with a focus in the Anthropology of Outer Space. She is a veteran analog astronaut of four missions and has held roles as Crew Health and Safety Officer, Lead Flight Director for Remote Mission Support, Commander, Journalist, and Geologist/Scientist.

During her Undergraduate career, her research led her to discover Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS) where she learned that there was an opportunity to start a Collegiate Chapter at her University. She was acting President of the UNT Chapter from 2017-2019. Morgan's other involvement with SEDS includes her completed role as 2020 Chair for Students for the Exploration and Development of Space's annual conference SpaceVision, where she worked alongside SEDS USA Board and Staff and space industry leaders and professionals to host a virtual conference for SEDS USA Chapters from around the globe.

In April, 2019, Morgan had the pleasure of taking the initiative to work directly alongside the NASA STEM Outreach team to plan the NASA Live TV event: The Future of Space (a live discussion for college students which included senior NASA leadership including Administrator Jim Bridenstine and astronauts aboard the International Space Station) and ensure its promotion and success. She was excited to have the opportunity to attend the event in person on April 29, 2019 at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. She also had the opportunity to conduct UX design research for the National Association of Applied Anthropology (NAPA) for the redesign of their website and was able to present her research at the annual Society for Applied Anthropologists (SfAA) Conference in Portland, Oregon in March 2019.

Morgan is currently conducting research and asset management for an aerospace client and is COO of an international space analog research and education company.

In continuation of education, she is currently attending the Advanced PoSSUM Space Academy (Polar Suborbital Science in the Upper Mesosphere) as a part of class 2021 and has completed their Orbital Mechanics, Mission Simulation, and Life Support System courses, and plans to pursue a Masters degree to continue learning about Applied Anthropology, architecture and UX, and how they can assist in solving complex human factors problems for deep space missions and habitat design. During and after her educational career, Morgan hopes to work closely with space agencies on developing habitats and mission protocols by understanding the human perspective of those who will be utilizing them on long-duration missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

Ana Belen Conrado - Research Associate, UT Southwestern Medical Center

Ana Belen Conrado (she/her) graduated from UNT with an MS in Applied Anthropology in 2017. During her time at UNT, she collaborated with Dallas Habitat for Humanity and their veterans housing program. Her thesis focused on the housing needs of veterans in the Dallas area as well as an exploratory study on the awareness of Veteran Housing programs in the Dallas area, primarily Habitat for Humanity's program. She currently works at UT Southwestern Medical Center in the Department of Population and Data Sciences as a Research Associate and member of the Qualitative Research Core. In her role, she assists on various department projects that range from COVID 19 studies to the awareness/knowledge of long acting reversible contraception (LARCs) for youth in foster care. Her role ranges from interviewing participants to qualitative coding. When Ana Belen is not working she enjoys going on long walks with her dog Tails or finding a new tasty treat to bake/cook.

Kitty Sopow - Social Scientist, Alaska Environmental Science and Services Integration Center

Kitty Sopow is a Social Scientist in the Alaska Environmental Science and Services Integration Center for the National Weather Service in Anchorage, Alaska. Kitty is a cultural anthropologist and uses theories and methods to integrate social, behavioral and/or economic science with the NWS mission and priorities at the regional level. She offers professional advice and assistance to peers and other staff members on the use of social media tools and supplements the community outreach efforts of various regional programs. She is responsible for improving coordination, increasing the quality of social science capabilities at NOAA and improving the effectiveness of NOAA's products, services and risk communication with core partners and the public. She has worked extensively in Alaska prior to and since earning her MS in Applied Anthropology in 2019.

Gigi Taylor - Qualitative UX Researcher, Indeed

Gigi Taylor is a business anthropologist working as qualitative UX Researcher at Indeed in Austin Texas. Gigi embraces the idea that consumer and user experience insights informed by cultural anthropology can serve as the muse and inspiration for all aspects of product and brand strategy. Prior to joining Indeed, Gigi owned her own research firm and was a partner at Practica, a consumer consultancy. Previously, Gigi was an Assistant Professor of Advertising at Texas State University. Her published academic research has appeared in both advertising and anthropological journals. Gigi holds PhD and MA in Advertising from the University of Texas and an MA in Applied Anthropology from University of North Texas.

Cory Wornell - Youth & Reproductive Health Advisor, US Agency for International Development

Cory Wornell (she/her) is the Youth & Reproductive Health Advisor for the US Agency for International Development (USAID, the largest donor for development work); she was the test pilot for UNT's dual masters' program in Applied Anthropology and Public Health earning a MS and MPH in 2008. In her current role, Cory champions youth interests in all Sexual & Reproductive Health (SRH) interventions through providing guidance on technical approaches and teaching Positive Youth Development. Cory works closely with gender advisors and the social norms team while providing support to the 35 family planning priority countries; currently, she works most closely with Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Guinea, Bangladesh, and India.

Cory holds a BA in Human Services (social work) and psychology, has held mental health positions (she is the former Director for Training and Evaluation in a mental health integration project), and has played multiple SRH roles (community educator, researcher, trainer, STI tester, patient advocate, technical advisor). She was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Jamaica for three years teaching HIV education with a voluntary youth group while learning the importance of cultural context and relevance for health messages to be truly heard. These lessons are what brought Cory to the UNT Anthropology Dept.
