CUSTOMIZE YOUR ANTHROPOLOGY TRACK

The Department of Anthropology at the University of North Texas is committed to guiding our students in making the most out of their Anthropology Major. The department offers various academic certificates that serve to highlight a specialized focus in your coursework. These include customizing your elective options towards issues in Social Justice Studies, Urban Studies, Applied Anthropology, and Popular Culture Students interested in pursuing acceptance into our Master's Degree Program in Applied Anthropology should consider tailoring their coursework towards the latter. Please make an appointment with our undergraduate faculty advisor, Professor Nelson, to discuss course options that focus on your interests. Junior and Senior majors are also encouraged to reach out to learn about credit opportunities for deeper engagement such as avenues for undergraduate research, internship experiences, and directed study courses.

A Note on Physical/Forensic Anthropology and Archaeology:

The curriculum of the Anthropology degree plan does not support preparation for a future in physical/forensic anthropology nor archaeology. Students interested in pursuing forensic science are advised to touch base with UNT's Forensics Program which is housed in the College of Biological Sciences and requires that students major in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Biology. The Department of Anthropology is not affiliated with this program.

Foreign Language Requirement

Two semesters of a foreign language are required for the anthropology major at the advanced level (2040, 2050). If you have never had foreign language instruction, this realistically will end up being 2 years of language instruction because you will have to take the introductory level courses (1010, 1020) in order to reach the required advanced level classes (2040, 2050). However, if you have had prior foreign language instruction you may be able to place out of one, or all four, required language courses. Placement tests are free of charge; however, students are only able to take the placement exam once during their college career at UNT. Placement tests are offered regularly by the Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures.

Note: In response to COVID-19, placement and proficiency exams are being conducted remotely. Please refer to the following links for additional information on how to schedule an exam.
