Residency Requirement

At least 12 hours of advanced (3***/4***) level credit must be taken at UNT (in-residence) in order to fulfill the ANTH Major. Pending the fulfillment of the Major residency requirement, a student is able to request the department's consideration in substituting credit for courses taken at another institution. In order to request consideration, a student must submit a Credit Substitution Request form to the Undergraduate Advisor, Professor Melissa Nelson, PRIOR to enrolling at another institution.

Study Abroad

The Department of Anthropology will review requests from students seeking study abroad credit towards their anthropology degree plans.  If a student is seeking to use study abroad credit for CORE requirements, or degree plans outside of anthropology, then they should contact their academic advisor.

The first step towards seeking out whether or not your study abroad course will count towards your anthropology degree plan, is to submit the credit request form below. Note that in order to consider whether a course is eligible towards fulfilling anthropology degree requirements, we need to receive not only a completed form, but also a recent syllabus for every course under consideration. The type of courses we tend to approve include those that: 1) are taught by anthropologists; 2) list significant anthropological literature in their course content; and/or 3) are delivered through the anthropology department at an accredited institution. However, fulfilling some, all, or none of these qualifications does not guarantee nor discount credit approval. Each request is determined on a case-by-case basis. It is important to submit your credit request form prior to enrolling in your study abroad courses. We aim to communicate a decision as to whether your request is approved within 2 business weeks of submitting a completed application. If you have any further questions, contact the Anthropology Faculty Advisor, Professor Nelson.

CUSTOMIZE YOUR ANTHROPOLOGY TRACK

The Department of Anthropology at the University of North Texas is committed to guiding our students in making the most out of their Anthropology Major. The department offers various academic certificates that serve to highlight a specialized focus in your coursework. These include customizing your elective options towards issues in Social Justice Studies, Urban Studies, Applied Anthropology, and Popular Culture Students interested in pursuing acceptance into our Master's Degree Program in Applied Anthropology .should consider tailoring their coursework towards the applied certificate. Please make an appointment with our undergraduate faculty advisor, Professor Nelson, to discuss course options that focus on your interests. Junior and Senior majors are also encouraged to reach out to learn about credit opportunities for deeper engagement such as avenues for undergraduate research, internship experiences, and directed study courses.

A Note on Physical/Forensic Anthropology and Archaeology:

The curriculum of the Anthropology degree plan does not support preparation for a future in physical/forensic anthropology nor archaeology. Students interested in pursuing forensic science are advised to touch base with UNT's Forensics Program which is housed in the College of Biological Sciences and requires that students major in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Biology. The Department of Anthropology is not affiliated with this program.

Foreign Language Requirement

Two semesters of a foreign language are required for the anthropology major at the advanced level (2040, 2050). If you have never had foreign language instruction, this realistically will end up being 2 years of language instruction because you will have to take the introductory level courses (1010, 1020) in order to reach the required advanced level classes (2040, 2050). However, if you have had prior foreign language instruction you may be able to place out of one, or all four, required language courses. Placement tests are free of charge; however, students are only able to take the placement exam once during their college career at UNT. Placement tests are offered regularly by the Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures.
