UNT Faculty Profile: Susan Squires
Susan Squires is a retired associate professor in the Department of Anthropology at
the University of North Texas and is teaching on modified service. While she is best
known for her expertise on customer insights research, she is currently investigating
the potential of social networks as a mechanism for engaging Newfoundland fishing
outports in collaborative governance. Previously she was a Senior Researcher and Team
Lead at Trinity College Dublin where she conducted research on the factors contributing
to loneliness in older Irish adults and the negative impact these factors have on
overall health. Past customer insight projects include evaluative research for the
Department of Education's initiative in Science, Math and Technology; mapping workflow
of computational scientists on a special project for the Department of Energy studying
issues of productivity for the next generation supercomputer; and, led ethnographic
research for a range of technology companies. Her edited book, Creating Breakthrough
Ideas (2002), chronicles the application of her research theory and methodology as
used by anthropologists in business and design. Her work has been featured in publications
such as USA Today, New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Christian Science Monitor,
and Industry Standard. She received her Ph.D. in Anthropology from Boston University.
