Anthropology Major and Minor

Students must meet the general requirements for the B.A. degree in the university core (47 hours):

  • English (6 hours)

1 Anth 2045, 2100, 2150, 2350, or 4050 are in this category.
2 Anth 2700 and Arch 2800 are in this category.
3 Anth 1010 and 2250 are in this category.

Majors must complete 36 hours in anthropology to include:

18 hours required:

  • ANTH 2300 Culture and Society
  • ARCH 2800 Archaeological Science
  • ANTH 2700 Introduction to Physical Anthropology
  • ANTH 3000-level "Area Studies"
  • ANTH 4011 Field Methods or a second area studies course
  • ANTH 4021 Development of Anthropological Thought

18 hours of electives:

15 hours of which must be taken from the upper division level (3000 / 4000), minimum of 6 hours from 4000 level courses. A maximum of 3 hours of ANTH 4920 may be applied toward satisfying the 36 hour requirement.

In addition to university core requirements, students must complete the following courses:

Statistics (3 hours - MATH 1680, SOCI 4880, or PSYC 3610)
Outside Electives (3 hours - PHIL 2330, PHIL 2600, GEOG 1170, GEOG 1200, HIST 1050, HIST 1060)
Foreign Language (2 courses/8 hours or placement out through examination)
No minor is required.

Anthropology Minor



A minor requires completion of 18 hours in anthropology to include ANTH 1010, one introductory (2000) level course, and 6 hours from the upper-division level (3000 / 4000).

NOTE: Advanced standing or consent of the department is a prerequisite for enrollment in 3000 and 4000 level courses.

 

Certificate in Applied Anthropology (NEW!)

Beginning fall 2011, you can receive a certificate in applied anthropology. The certificate is 12 hours and includes:

  • ANTH 2300 Culture and Society
  • ANTH 4000 Applied Anthropology
  • Select 2 courses from:
    • 4200.001 Medical Anthropology
    • 4300.001 Migrants and Refugees
    • 4400.001 Environmental Anthropology
    • 4601.001 Anthropology of Education
    • 4701.007 Anthropology of Business
